I joined a Board Game group last week. I realized what a complete noobie I am. The group had a good 50 or so games to choose from and I maybe recognized 2-3 titles.
Can anyone give me a few games that I could focus on as I explore? I'm looking for games that are just great examples of one type of game or another so I can try those and then see what I want to expand from. There's a meeting later this week and I'd like to have at least a clue on which groups to join.
Thanks <3 sunny

Dominion is my game of choice. It's a deck-building game where almost all of the interplay between players is indirect. Settlers and Agricola are always fun, as are Peurto Rico and Alhambra. Personally, I'm also a fan of party-based games, ie Arkham Horror and Battlestar Galactica (which is especially fun because you get to accuse people of being Cylons).

Bacon! wrote: Dominion is my game of choice. Ooh! You may know of this website already but http://dominion.isotropic.org/ hosts a free online version of the game. It has a decently-sized and active playerbase enough for anyone to pop in and casually play with other people. I'd play around on that website Sunny once you learn the gist of the game (if you do want to learn it). It's a fun game and if it interests you enough it can get really addicting.

I'm basically a huge board game nerd, so I can help you. Agricola is my favorite game, the best worker placement game there is. A close second for me is Funkenschlag (Power Grid), which has a really good balancing mechanism. Other games that I really like include Through the Ages (long civ-like game, takes 4 hours with 3 people), Race for the Galaxy (brilliant card game, you can try it online at http://keldon.net/rftg/) and Puerto Rico. Notre Dame is good, short (about 1 hour) but fun. I don't really like Dominion, the base game is too simple imo, you need some expansions to make it interesting. http://boardgamegeek.com/ is the best boardgame website there is, they have a good ranking system at http://boardgamegeek.com/browse/boardgame - the really good games have really high ranking (though the converse is not necessarily true since different people like different kind of games).

thanks! I am familar with 'geek's site. Apparently they've decided to play "Roman Games" this week. I suppose that means Agricola? Last week I played Vikings. It was fairly decent and I'd play it a few more times to see how much depth the game has. It's a tile placement game for those not familar.

I guess "Roman games" just means games with a Roman theme. Agricola doesn't have that, you have to build a farm.
The best way to discover good games is just to play a lot with these gaming groups.

After playing with expansions, it's hard to go back to vanilla, but back when it was the only game available we had a lot of fun with it. One thing that's good about the expansions though is it makes action-focused decks more competitive, meaning you're less likely to win with a deck that focuses only on buying money.

I looked into this stuff last year as a diversion, here's some links to share with you from my bookmmarks. Game wise those that appealed were Dominion, Rally Man, Castle Panic, Pirate vs Pirate http://www.boardgameswithscott.com/?page_id=78http://www.youtube.com/user/sdalden/videoshttp://littlemetaldog.com/http://www.frothersunite.com/index.html#fz

I recently purchased "Power grid" and it's a cool game as well. Down here, most of the titles from 999games are really popular, and fun to play.

dominion.isotropic.org is awesome!
My only gripe is that people don't know gamer etiquette - that loser types gg first. Most don't even realize that's bad manners.
You hop in, select 2-players, rank range, veto on or off (i suggest on) and point tracker (keep it on, hit "info" mid-game to read the current point score).

Apparently "Roman Games" to my new group means "Power grid - Italy Expansion". It was awesome!!! \o/ I'd play it again. There's enough depth there to hold my attention. The girl who won apparently had just come from playing it in some tournament. I'm adding it to my list of games I need to buy my own copy.
