Other than solid game design and a good physics engine the game is especially awesome because the developers and devs actually seem to care about the game. They have listened to the community during the beta and they are not over-nerfing classes/weapons and they are not over-buffing classes/weapons.
Game should be better post beta.

So game is now officially released and as amazing as ever. Why is everyone not playing this? are you all dumb?
For a forum community that seems to pride itself on skill based game play, this has one of the highest skill ceilings. You could spend 1000+ hours and still have room to improve.
Also, if you did not know this game is FREE TO PLAY and the unlock system is very forgiving. This is not pay to win and one of the best classes (pathfinder) has all the best unlocks already.
But yeah agreed, anyone that's ever enjoyed FPS's that are skill based should be playing this game. The devs are the best i've ever come across as well.
Capture the flag's never been better.

IGN - Base Defence The Rimmers of Rohlons Reach [rR]
I last played 3 days ago, so I'm not aware of any balance changes in the past 3 days.
Currently being lvl 8, my thoughts so far is that it's a fun game, but that, unlike what people are claiming, it is pretty pay to win. For starters, you need to crunch alot of hours to unlock additional classes. You get about 200-400 exp per win and classes cost between 5K to 20K. (If I'm not mistaken)
However, the biggest issues I'm having is with weapon imbalancedness. Explosive charge weapons (Spinfuser, thumper, ...) are just so strong compared to guns, matches can get pretty stupid at times. I always find myself at the higher end of the scoreboards, so I don't think I'm bad by any means, but whenever I'm in a scrimmage with another good player, it's essentially bunnyhop around and shoot where you think the other guy is going to land, and this can take quite a while. Using an actual gun would be an option, if it wasn't for the fact it takes so long to kill a guy. (At 75 per bullet, and players having around 1.2K hp)
Other than that, I wish there were more maps, or more map mechanics better said. Every map is pretty much the same, just different terrain and textures; I think this is also why I can only play it 1-2 hours max before getting bored, there's just not enough mechanics to toy around with.
So I went out and downloaded this game today to give it a shot. It is free and Moocow has been trying to get me to play it for about 100 years now. Jaden said I'm dumb if I don't play it so I'd better play it right? I mean one should never disappoint Jaden Stone. I've been on call for work all week and I'm exhausted, but I thought I'd bring it up for a minute or two just to get the feel of the game before going to bed...
Well shit. Shit. Shit. Shit. Shit. Shit.
It is 3 hours and 14 games later and I'm still not in bed. I have absolutely no idea what the hell I'm doing but this is just fun. And I mean the old school 1996 Quake Deathmatch bouncing grenades off of the wall and blowing up the guy behind you type of fun. Between the skiing, the jetpack, and the Spinfusor I'm hooked. I mean sure, I can see some shortcomings, but this is the most fun I've had in a while and the price is right. This was a great recommendation guys, thanks.

You might want to stick with it a bit longer - good players are absolutely wrecking people with SMGs, and most automatic weapons are considered OP by most comp players. I personally love the mind games that go into dueling, but that's not really what CTF is about anyway. It's about timing, positioning, movement, coordination - such a fucking beautifully balanced gametype. Without a doubt the most fun I've ever had playing an FPS.
I'm definitely not planning on quitting, I just hope they'll throw in soome extra maps. I think one of the issues is that when you're starting a scrimmage with another player, the pace slows down conciderably. (For example, seeing a 140 KM/H kill and flag grab is quite rare because you've only got a split second to aim and shoot) The problem then is that you're pretty much a sitting duck for other enemy players looking at you from a distance, especially with said explosion weapons. And if you wanna keep your own pace up, you'll barely get any kills because you've only got that split second to get off a hit, because you'll just shoot by your opponents and be out of range before you can reload.
So while gliding and jetpacking is extremely fun, and can definitely be advantagous at times, I feel that the pace of the game gets decided by the pace of the majority of players. If everybody starts hopping around and shotting at landing spots, you've not got much choice other than doing the same. Doing flyby's is an option, but as I said, you'll get one bullet off and then have to spend the next 20 seconds circling the map around for another round.
That is offcourse untill you manage to pick off the flag, in team deathmatch. Gliding at max speed with the intire enemy team chasing you is just ridiculous fun because you know that you're determining the pace of the game at that moment. There's only 1 speed for the enemy team, and that's yours. And when you're stacking up a high amount Flag Helds the feeling/adrenaline gets pretty insane, esp. when you're still picking off kills in the process.
As I said though, I would love to see more maps, especially ones with buildings where u can hide behind and more vertical based maps. I mean, you can jump like 300 ft. into the sky, am I the only one who would love to see a vertical map where you just jump from spaceship to spacehip (as they're floating in certain maps already) going from ground level to 3000+ feet in the air in no time?
EDIT: Also my in-game name is Rendier, and I play Uk/London. (Altough I think I can change servers no problem)
Seems you're playing a lot of TDM (unless i read that wrong), have you given CTF much of a go? It's really what this game shines, and the issues you dislike become a lot less apparent. Given you've enjoyed carrying the flag in TDM and having everyone chase you there's a good chance you'd enjoy playing pathfinder capping/chasing in CTF.
Your exp gain is also a lot larger in CTF, should commonly get 1k+ xp per round (without vip) with the numerous badges/medals available that give you bonus xp to get unlocks a lot faster than TDM.
Wouldn't be surprised if they do more of the maps you talk about in Arena, that flying kinda scaffold map is similar to what you describe.

Is there any QQ organization going on with this game? I've played Tribes' since 1998 and would like to continue. Trouble is the people I played with 12 years ago are pretty much gone.
I will play when they allow people to mod the game and create maps. The arena mod is a joke and is not actually arena. The only maps that even feel correct are the ones that they copied from Tribes 2, but even they could use some modding. They need to limit the mode to only a light class and a medium class, not allowing full range of classes. Limit the guns that they can use to ones to the basics. Make it to when you die you are out, the way arena should actually be played. Continue to steal FlyingElmo's maps, and maybe then the game will be good. It is kind of odd that helioarena has not been made yet, it was possibly the most played map. The made aeroena which was quite possibly the most hated pub map of them all.
